How is it horror

I am creating a blog because I want to inform people about the genre, specifically about horror because Halloween is around the corner and why not talk about the genre that most people are exited for this month?

The genre of horror is meant to create a sense of fear within the audience. Horror films are usually meant to scare, frighten, and repulse the audiences. The genre of horror goes way back to Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, where the horror stories explored themes like death, demons, and the afterlife.Although some people are not the biggest fans of horror movies, some people do enjoy the thrill and the suspense this films have.

Content:

Horror films often take place in a dark, scary setting to have the audience experience fear, and suspense, and set the mood of the story. Horror movies usually take place in a dark, creepy house that had a horrific past, like someone dying in a gruesome way, and due to those events, the house has a curse and there is something paranormal like a demon living inside the house.

EX: the film The Conjuring uses a dark, spooky setting to develop a sense of fear and add suspense

Moreover, all the horror movies have a common thing of having the audience experience fear. Fear can be developed in a horror film by creating a character of a demon, haunted doll, or a killer clown. These and more characters are used to create a sense of fear to the audience, and these can also make the people fear things they didn't know they had a fear of like dolls.  In most cases, the character made has something evil attached to them, or the character happens to have a curse and something most be done to stop it. Other characteristics these characters have is that they are made to be scary. These characters often have make up and are made to look in a frightening, terrific way so that the audience can be fearful and also feel the suspense of the movie.

EX: The film Terrifier 2 uses makeup to make Art the clown look scary

Suspense is also a huge part on making horror films, since without it, the audience wouldn't be as engaged and wouldn't pay attention to the movie at all. Suspense is the element that builds excitement in the audience and at the same time is building up fear and that sense of not knowing what is going to happen next in the movie. Jump scares are common on almost all the horror films, since it makes the movie more exiting and appealing to the audience. Horror movies often rise the tension by playing dark music and the protagonist is usually walking alone in a dark setting. The protagonists usually hear strange sounds while they are walking. They are also close ups of their faces to emphasize more the situation they are in, which is most of the times not good. And when you least expect it, there is a jump scare of a clown in your face trying to kill you.

EX: The film The Nun adds suspense by having the character walk alone in a dark place, having the nun walking behind her

Production techniques:

Horror films tend to set the mood by lighting and color. By being able to control and understand the color palette, you can add fear and suspense by adding more black and less lighting. This would have the audience fear the unknown and make them have an idea of what the evil might look like. Shapes and forms are easier to read when something is lit clearly with a very limited color palette. The frame has to be very focused. When you fill the frame with a lot of black, you are evoking terror and the unknown, which helps draw the viewer into that universe.

EX: The film Halloween adds far and suspense by adding more black where Michael Myers is.

Marketing:

You don't need to spend thousands of dollars to create a horror movie. With creativity, there is chance that the film can have success with a low budget. Besides, being creative and having good ideas can lead the film to be successful, since the audience would be intrigued by it, not matter what the cost to make the movie was. Social media, web marketing, and email marketing are all low-cost methods of networking that have a huge impact on society.

EX: the film Paranormal Activity was a low budget movie, costing 22,500 to make that had a huge success, by making 250 millions of dollars.

Film samples

the film Terrifier 2 (2022) is the sequel to Terrifier (2016), both directed by Damien Leone. After Art the clown was "killed" in the first movie, he resuscitates and terrorizes the town of Miles county for the second time, but he is specifically after a sister (Sienna) and her brother (Jonathan). In the movie, we learn that Sienna and Jonathan's dad past away from a brain tumor, and while he was alive, he started imagining things and drawing them down in a book, including Art the clown and the victims that have been killed and are going to be killed. In the book, there is also a drawing of Sienna with the exact same costume she was going to wear at a halloween party. This leads the audience to think that Art the clown may be the dad, since in the movie, he kills almost everyone that gets in his way but when it comes to Sienna and Jonathan, Art does hurt them, however, he doesn't kill them. Or Art the clown might be a manifestation from his dad. The movie includes a lot of graphic, bloody, and horrific killings, making it fall into the gore category. It also includes suspense, fear, foreshadowing, dark music and a twisted sequel that makes it fall into the horror category

Insidious (2010) is a supernatural horror film directed by James Wan. It is the first movie of the Insidious franchise but third if you are watching it in chronological order. This movie is about a married couple (Josh and Renai) and their kids ( Foster, Cali and Dalton) move into a new home. When Dalton slips away to investigate the attic, he comes upon a terrifying presence and falls from the step stools. He unexpectedly falls into a comma the next day. After 3 months of treatment without no response, the family start to experience paranormal activity. After Renai is attacked by an evil spirit, she decides that they would be moving into a new house, thinking it is haunted. At the new house, the paranormal activity is still present. Josh's mother calls psychic Elise Rainer and paranormal investigators Specs and Tucker. With doing investigations, Elise reveals that Dalton is not in a comma and was born with the capacity to astral travel and had been doing it unintentionally, thinking he was dreaming. This time, he went too far and had been captured in "The further", a place populated by tortured souls of the death. His body would be in a vegetive state without his mental presence, and spirits seek to use it to return to the physical realm; some do so to relive their previous lives, while others do so to inflict harm to others. Elise then performs a seance and reveals that she helped Josh when he was 8 years old. Turns out he has the same abilities as Dalton, but didn't remember. Josh was the only one who could help Dalton. He went in "The further", saved Dalton and also confronted the spirit that wanted to posses him when he was younger. He successfully comes back with Dalton to the physical world, however Elise can see there is something wrong with Josh. When she takes a picture of him, Josh gets mad and straggles her to death. Renai is terrified and in the photo, is revealed that   Josh got possessed by the demon. This movie uses suspense, the use of terrifying characters like demons, traveling to another dimension to be in the horror section.

CREATIVE CRITICAL REFLECTION

In one of the videos, it sounds like one of my family member is dying but I swear, my Aunt is okay. https://drive.google.com/file/d/15RVz-t4...
